Strange stuff for sure, and the review score was horrendously low Since the guy has thrown a couple of names Cynic, Pestilence in his writing, ones that definitely aroused my curiosity, I had to give this obscurity a listen, and hear for myself how deplorably the Exumers had fallen… what I heard made me fucking jubilant, in a way very few efforts have in the past few years.
How could have I missed this marvel back then? The only reason why Exumer are not mentioned right beside Mekong Delta, Living Death, Sieges Even, and Deathrow is that this demo remains a most obscure entry from their discography, and one that was largely denounced by those who were lucky enough to hear it back then. Coming right after the stormy hyper-aggression unleashed on the sophomore it had no chances to make anyone fall in love with this new, much more intelligent direction regardless of how fashionable it was becoming at the time.
Third showing, a third vocalist; another Guinness Record; these guys were on fire indeed back then! For the purpose Lil Ol Me - Exumer - Whips & Chains hired a new more melodic singer, provided a crystal clear sound quality, and last but not least, pulled out some truly outstanding original ideas out of their sleeves.
Von Stein behind the mike. This short effort sounded perfectly relevant with regards to the dominant tendencies on the field the band looking forward, abandoning their more straight-forward, bashing roots the way Destruction, Deathrow and Living Death did. Its psychedelic, spacey aura was a novelty for the German scene bringing the spirit of Voivod again to the other side of The Atlantic, prompting other bands like the Swiss Calhoun Conquer and the Swedes Omnitron to do the same.
For Exumer this was the last showing before the reformation in the new millennium which saw Von Stein back, the band looking good with two fairly decent full-lengths released so far. Ray Mensh is still here — probably the only consistent member this band ever had. Yeah, not even the founding members Von Stein or Syke Bornetto not sure about founding member status, but he was in Tartaros are as consistent as him.
All I can say is that he sucks ass — they toned Lil Ol Me - Exumer - Whips & Chains their sound to Lil Ol Me - Exumer - Whips & Chains some half-assed groove fusion dickhead. People, do not listen to this demo if you want raw, pissed off thrash metal with supplemental riffs.
The production is very clean and clear, so those riffs will have a lot of backing power to their distortion. No More Sorrow - Hongkong Syndikat - No More Sorrow / Dont Stop To Move fancy, but still a far stretch compared to what most people remember Exumer for.
Drumming still kicks into gear when necessary, but the production nailed the drum kit down to the same sterile tone — this happens often with production. Some may like this, others Love Attack (B-Jam Disco Edit) - B-Jam - Superbreak presents B-Jam (File) definitely hate this.
